It’s been about a week since this fire was started. Someone a few miles away ignored all safety precautions when burning debris from hurricane Michael and caught about 600 acres on fire. Last weekend I was away on a trip and on Sunday I came home to see this:
Yes, that’s my house with a firetruck sitting in the driveway. The fire had burned up to the trees and bushes about 100 ft from the back of my house. My back yard was used as part of the fire break the forest service created to contain the fire and keep it away from our community: The forest service also had a helicopter out here flying back and forth from a pond at the end of our runway and the fire, picking up 200-300 gallons of water at a time and making a round trip in about 90-120 seconds. I credit this effort for keeping the fire out of our community: This was two days later after most of the fires were out and the firefighters moved off to where it was still burning:All in all, it’s been a pretty eventful weekend – and week so far.
